When We Get in the Way of Our Own Success: Struggles Women Face in Business

Behind every successful woman is herself

“If you wait for perfect conditions, you’ll never get anything done.” Ecclesiastes 11:4.

I unexpectedly came across this quote today and it really spoke to me. You see, the perfectionist in me wants to wait for just the right moment to complete my big projects.  It’s something I’ve battled all of my life.  I’m not a procrastinator; I just want things to feel “right” to me as I do them.  With me, it’s stuff like having quiet while I do my writing.  My daughter is three now and I don’t get much quiet time.  So I write anyway, sometimes in the midst of chaos.  I’ve been wanting to do yoga at home, but have been struggling to find the right time of day and the right room for it.  Sometimes my perfectionistic, control freak nature still gets in my way.  But I’m working on it.

I’ve personally learned over the last few years that when it comes to growing your business, there is no perfect time.  It’s also likely that perfect business idea you had is going to end up as something completely different when you’re done.  But that’s okay – things evolve as they are supposed to. Is College Really Necessary?

Today I’m going to discuss a topic that some people may find offensive, but it’s definitely something I feel is of importance.  I want to talk about whether college is truly necessary. I don’t know about you, but I was always raised with the belief that a college degree was a surefire path to success.  As a result, I spent seven years in higher education attending  college and graduate school.  I felt that the more education I got, the better my chances in life were towards beings “successful”.  All that my higher education awarded me was some fond memories, nearly $100,000 worth of student loan debt, and a few day jobs that sounded impressive in title but barely paid over $20,000.  I assure you that’s not what I spent all of those years in college for.

Before I go any further, let me state that I do believe that college degrees are necessary in some cases.  Doctors and medical professionals should never practice without the proper training and credentials.  Therapists should be appropriate trained as should anyone who is paid to help others with a life crisis or a health issue.  Lawyers fall in there as well.  But I’m talking about something else entirely. How to Start Your Own Business (Part 1): Choosing a Business

Starting your own business seems like such a simple concept.  In actuality, it’s woven with hundreds of complexities, most of which you don’t have answers for in the beginning.  It can be so easy to get completely overwhelmed with the start up process that a lot of people stop right there and never go back.  In addition to the major task of figuring out what kind of business you want to start, you immediately get wrapped up in having an official business plan, deciding what kind of legal entity you want your business to be, business taxes, where you will house your business, who will work for you, how your new business will affect your family life, when you will quit your day job, and on and on.  No wonder so many businesses fail before they even get started!

As someone who’s been there, done that, I’d like to share what I’ve learned about starting a business with you in the hopes that you can one day enjoy a successful business too.  There’s no way to do all of this in one post, so I encourage you to stick with me while I share with you.  It will totally be worth your time.

Working From Home Is Not So Easy

Today I’m going to talk about what it takes to work from home so that you can become a financially  independent woman.  Let me first dispense of all of those beautiful images that are thrown at you by work from home scammers on late night television and online ads.  It’s not about putting in a few hours and then kicking back for the rest of the day.  However, I’m guessing that you probably already have realized that since you are on my site reading about what this all REALLY means.

Working from home is not for everyone.  It takes a lot of self-discipline and perseverance.  You have to be organized and motivated to be able to do this.  You must be able to juggle and multitask.  To get ahead, you have to always be willing to take on something new and go to the next level.  Be willing to constantly be reinventing your business model if that’s what it takes.  Note: This is not just showing up at a job, putting in your eight hours, going home and collecting a paycheck from it.  If that’s what you’re looking for, then you’ve come to the wrong place.

How I Started Working From Home: Desperation Sparks Creativity

Nearly five years ago I became self-employed and started working from home. It wasn’t something I planned to do, it just kind of happened. Let me explain.

A couple of months before I started working for myself, I had the equivalent of a corporate job. I was working in diabetes research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Although I was working at a well known and high reputed hospital and had phenomenal bosses and co-workers, I was completely miserable. I was barely getting by with what they were paying me, promotion was unlikely to ever happen, and (most importantly) I knew that this wasn’t my true calling. At the time, I was unsure what I was supposed to be doing with my life and it felt like I was at a standstill.

While I was caught up in this miserable holding pattern I had created for myself, I was given the opportunity to audition for a singing job at a Georgia nightclub. My then boyfriend / now husband was responsible for helping make that happen and I truly appreciate him for helping me work past that life desire. I had always wanted to be a singer, so when I was offered the job, I immediately took it. Sure that this was what I was destined for, I gave Vanderbilt three days notice and moved out of state by the end of the week. It was a very big risk, but it felt great to me at the time!

Juggling Motherhood and a Career

Recently, my two year old daughter Alex was sick.  I did what I’m sure most mothers want to do when their little one is sick.  I held her close all day, watched movies with her, let her nap on me, and helped wipe her nose whenever she requested (which seemed like every 10 seconds there for quite a while).  When my child is sick, I want her to always feel safe and comforted and know that I am there for her.  That’s what I’m for after all – I am her mother.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So in the middle of all of this, I began to ponder what moms do when they have no choice but to go to work even when their child is sick.  I realize that not all moms have the guilt free, stress free option of staying at home when their child is sick like I do.  Some women instead have end up sending their child to school or day care even when sick or to spend the day with a relative so that they can go to work and keep their job or just make as much money as possible to keep food on the table. Other women stay home with their kids, but worry about how the lost time at work will affect their standing.  Women should be able to do it all and moms should not have to choose.
